about

Hearing Velitchka Yotcheva's 2006 recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach's Six Cello Suites can be a moving experience, but listeners must be prepared for intensely physical readings that inspire feelings of excitement more often than of reverie. These pieces make Herculean demands of any player, and Yotcheva certainly executes the most challenging passages with tremendous strength and confidence, if not always with a pretty tone or fluid legato. Indeed, her playing is the product of a Russian education, and it can be brusque and forceful at times, making these Baroque dances irresistible in their energy and rhythmic thrust. Yet her dynamism also leads to many incidental string snaps and clacks of the bow, especially in her most vigorous attacks; and her strenuous exertions produce many audible exhalations. Still, Yotcheva's deeply passionate interpretations are penetrating in their tonal intensity and gorgeous in their rich coloration, and the extraneous noises cited above can be ignored easily enough when the expressive depth of the music becomes apparent. However, because the noises might prejudice some listeners and prevent a full appreciation of these powerful performances, they should be heard more than once to get a feeling for their sustained, if sometimes roughly articulated, lyricism, and to discover that this set is one of the most rewarding versions available. The recorded sound is focused and close enough to the instrument to have credible presence, yet surrounded with an agreeable resonance that helps round out the occasionally buzzy tone of the bottom strings.
