about

Velitchka Yotcheva is a player with a warm tone, a strong technique, and an affecting way with phrasing. In this recital, Yotcheva performs works and arrangements by composers as diverse as Boccherini and Rachmaninov, and carries them all off with aplomb and panache. Her Kol Nidrei by Bruch is deeply soulful and wonderfully aching. Her Introduction et Polonaise brilliante by Chopin is superbly played and delightfully charming. Her Sonata No. 6 in A major, G. 13, by Boccherini is gracefully elegant and lightly lyrical. Her Vocalise by Rachmaninov is marvelously expressive and longingly yearning. And her closing arrangement of the Adagio from Haydn's C major Violin Concerto is spryly nimble and magnificently magisterial. Yotcheva's accompanist, Patrice Laré, is sensitive and sympathetic, if not especially assertive. Disques XXI's sound is like a desert horizon: very, very flat and very, very distant.
